FAQ

Frequently Asked Question(s)

Is it possible to make a reservation Långnäs-Galtby or Osnäs-Hummelvik or vice versa without making an overnight stop?

Answer:

Yes, it is possible to make a reservation for "lighter" vehicles without a trailer. The number of transit ferry bookings are limited to 3 (13,5 m). Bookings can only be made to Ålandstrafiken's office.

Do I need to make a reservation for motorcycles, bicycles, or if I’m travelling without a vehicle?

Answer:

Yes, we recommend making reservations for motorcycles and bicycles, and for passengers. Especially during high season it is a good idea to make a reservation beforehand.

We already made a car reservation, but we forgot to mention that we have a caravan. Is this important?

Answer:

Yes. We only make reservations for 17 meters in total for camping cars, and cars and caravans per trip. When making the reservation, you should state type of vehicle, length and height of vehicle. Because the ferries are fairly small, there might not be room for your vehicle if you have given incorrect length and height.

How do I pay my bus ticket?

Answer:

You can pay with cash (euro), and with Finnish bank cards and credit cards.

How far in advance should one make a reservation?

Answer:

Make the reservation in good time, at least one month in advance. If you’re planning a trip in July, you should make your reservation at least two months in advance. If you’re planning to travel during Midsummer weekend, it’s a good idea to make the reservation 4-6 months in advance. Remember to reserve your return ticket as well, especially in July when the ferries can be full for two-three weeks in a row. It’s easier to try to make changes to an existing reservation than to make a new one at the very last minute in July.

I want to make a car reservation from Turku to Mariehamn, is it possible?

Answer:

No, we make reservations for the ferries departing from Galtby in Korpo, or Osnäs (Vuosnainen) in Kustavi on the Finnish mainland. Galtby is about 75 km from Turku, you take the road to Pargas (Parainen) and travel via Nagu to Korpo. Calculate a minimum of 2 hours time to get from Turku to Galtby by car. In order to get to Osnäs harbour, you drive to Kustavi and take the Vartsala cable ferry. Please observe that the cable ferry has its' own timetable and one should calculate a minimum of 1,5 h from Turku to Osnäs. We make reservations between Osnäs and Hummelvik (in the municipality of Vårdö appr. 50 km from Mariehamn) and Galtby-Långnäs (in the municipality of Lumparland appr. 30 km from Mariehamn).

What do you mean by “intermediate harbour”?

Answer:

By intermediate harbour we mean an island between the end harbours Galtby and Osnäs on the Finnish mainland and Långnäs, Hummelvik and Svinö on the Åland Islands.

I want to make a reservation from Långnäs to Överö, and from Degerby to Svinö. Is it possible?

Answer:

No, we don’t make reservations between Långnäs and Överö because the Föglö line between Svinö and Degerby operates about once an hour. The trip between Svinö and Degerby takes 30 minutes.

Does a trip on the ferries cost anything?

Answer:

Yes, you pay a fee for your vehicle when travelling from an end harbour (Hummelvik, Långnäs, Svinö, Osnäs, Galtby). Travel between the intermediate harbours is free of charge. Passengers travel for free.

Does Ålandstrafiken make reservations for accommodation in the archipelago?

Answer:

No, we only make car reservations. Enquiries about accommodation are best directed to Ålandsresor travel agency or to Viking Line’s travel agency. There are different kinds of accommodation available, everything from camping lots to hotels, depending on which intermediate harbour you make your overnight stop in.
